Young Father, 'I am happy and excited to see my life changing'
Rodger is 28 years old and he is in food retail business in Chipuwale, a small village in Malawi. He has a wife, Martha, and two children: Peter (4) and Mathews (6). There is a third child in the family – an orphan Chimwemwe (8) who they care for. Before applying for a loan with Deki in 2011, Rodger Mkorongo had been approved high interest credit elsewhere.
He was looking to expand his retail business selling sugar, salt and eggs from the porch of his family home but the interest he paid stunted any growth he had hoped for.
“Our loan interest was so high that we struggled to pay it back and improve on our capital.”
Though he was making a small profit from the sales he made, it wasn’t enough to support his wife, two young sons and nephew who he now also cares for.
“My family was living in poverty, I wanted to change this. We were interested in applying for the Deki loan because it was interest free and meant that we would be able to be self employed and support ourselves.”
Rodger received his loan in autumn 2011. He is now able to stock beans, rice, eggs and phone credit as well increase the amount of salt, sugar and cooking oil that he is buying in.
With his interest free loan Rodger is now making a profit of around MWK 25,000 (£96) with which he is providing for his family and investing for the future.
“I am happy and excited to see my life changing. I am now able to support my children and buy them pens and school books. I can buy soap, sugar and salt for our home. I have money to do many good things for my family.”
Rodger now has plans to open a bigger shop where he can sell his groceries rather than trading from his front porch.
“I think maybe even within six months I will see a great change in my business. I would like to thank Deki for this loan; we never imagined this would happen. I hope that Deki continue to help my community and help people improve on their lives.”
Deki partners with Temwa in Malawi.
