Sam in Kenya, the holiday she won with the Deki Holiday Raffle in 2018.

Meet Samantha Quill, winner of the 2018 Deki Holiday Raffle and a truly dedicated Deki supporter. This year she’s going above and beyond – cycling all the way from London to Paris to raise funds for Deki’s work! Definitely not your usual 50th birthday celebration.

Sam is a cycling and walking enthusiast, with the badges to prove it. In 2014, she undertook the Grand Union Challenge and walked 50km for Home-Start Dacorum, raising over £1000 for children and families. Just when you think ‘What could possibly top that?’, Sam’s 50th birthday challenge this year is completing the Global Challenges’ London to Paris Bike Ride for Deki!

A dedicated Deki lender since 2016, last year Sam bought a couple of tickets to Deki’s Holiday Raffle. To her surprise, her raffle numbers were drawn on Valentine’s Day and she became Deki’s first Holiday Raffle winner!  After an incredible two-week stay in the Kenyan eco-villa with her family, she continued to lend to hard-working entrepreneurs in Togo and Uganda.

Cyclists on the London to Paris bike ride, 2018

From the 24th – 28th July, Sam will be cycling an unbelievable 278 miles to raise money and awareness for Deki. That’s a tremendous journey! The route from London to Paris is one of the most iconic rides – definitely one for the bucket list! She’s doing  this amazing fundraising adventure in support of Deki’s projects in Togo and Uganda. The money she is raising will allow Deki to continue providing support to the most vulnerable and help them work their way out of poverty.

But let’s hear it from Sam herself…

I love Deki because they are committed to empowering people in the developing world to work their way out of poverty by providing very small microloans that otherwise wouldn’t be available from other micro-finance charities and organisations. The key aim is to break the cycle of poverty for entire  communities, however remotely they are situated, for generations to come. 100% of lenders’ money always goes directly to local people and Deki charges no fees for this; instead they rely on donations from lenders and supporters to keep the charity running, and promise to make the best use of every penny they get. From 24th – 28th July 2019 I’ll be on my bike as I try to face the challenge, and fundraise for my favourite charity!

We would like to thank Sam for undertaking such a momentous challenge for Deki! If you would like to support Sam on her journey, please visit her fundraising page.

Thank you Sam!
